Considered as one of the scariest movies ever made, Hereditary is harrowing, unsettling, and phenomenally acted. “As usual, you make a convincing case, and I agree with virtually everything you said. Aster is certainly a singular talent and a director to watch. I liked Bryne a lot, and his understated, restrained performance was a welcome contrast to Collette's brilliantly manic portrayal of a woman desperate to maintain her sanity in a life she's increasingly helpless to control. I, too, had some problem with the ending. But my main concern had more to do with its derivative nature than anything else. Admittedly, I saw it coming, and as a consequence it was a bit of a letdown. If Aster the screenwriter had nailed his movie with a more original denouement, I might have left the cinema thinking this to be a GREAT film. It's still excellent overall IMO, and I'd give it a slightly more generous 4 out of 5 deweys...”

“I was fortunate enough to see an advanced screening of this two weeks ago in Toronto that included a Q&A with the filmmaker. Ever since I was curious to hear your impressions of the film. I echo all of your sentiments regarding the artistry at work in the making of the film. Although, I think I bought into the ending a bit more than you upon first viewing. I thought it was a really gutsy way to go! I definitely want to see it a second time and wish we could have a Collider Nightmares roundtable discussion of the film. I'd really be interested in hearing everyone's thoughts on this one! :)”
