A very common dish in Chinese restaurants, pepper steak is tasty and savoury, packed with all the umami goodness that makes most Chinese food taste awesome! Now, you can save yourself the takeout, and actually make it at home.  

Pepper steak might be a strange sight to see in a slow cooker since it's normally cooked in a wok. It works surprisingly well, though. Beef, especially the tougher cuts, needs some time to become tender, so why not just throw it in a slow cooker while we're at it?  

While incredible when served on top of fragrant white rice, Slow Cooking Perfected recommends also trying it with some roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, bread, and noodles.

Ingredient list

Meat & Vegetables.

  • 1kg (2 lb) beef, cut into strips
  • 1 red bell pepper, thick slices
  • 1 green bell pepper, thick slices
  • 1 onion, chopped, thick slices

Sauce.

  • 1 beef bouillon cube
  • ¼ cup light soy sauce
  • ½ tsp. ginger, minced
  • 1 tsp. garlic, crushed
  • ¼ tsp. black pepper
  • 1 400g (crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tsp. brown sugar
  • ¼ cup boiling water

Thickener.

  • 1 Tbsp. cornstarch
  • 1 Tbsp. water
